PROJECT SUMMARY

A research project called the Stroke Therapy Evaluation Project (STEP) had been established to create a database of evidence based best practice relating to the medical care and support of stroke patients. The team was staffed by a variety of medical professionals based in Glasgow Royal Infirmary and was funded by the Big Lottery, Chest Heart and Stroke Scotland and the Health Foundation.

The project had been running for 18 months prior to the involvement of NVABLE at which point there was less than six months to develop and deploy the key deliverable - a web site to allow patients and other health professionals to interrogate the evidence.

NVABLE were contracted to deliver the web site which included:

  • Database design for a flexible hierarchical storage of the evidence statements along with associated references and trials. The hierarchy also allowed the evidence to be categorised in accordance with the team's process.
  • Conversion from the existing data structures into the new ones.
  • Development of the web site (including the design) to allow all potential users of the information to search and browse the evidence.
  • Development of a role based web application that provided full administration functionality to manage the data.
  • Manage imports of reference libraries (e.g. of clinical trials and reviews).

The site was completed on time and budget. Ready for the major launch at the Scottish National Stroke Forum.

NVABLE continues to host and support the web application for the project.
